Yes, this war is a war of ideals.  We have to win hearts and minds if we are going to defeat the support for the terrorists.  Torture and using chemical weapons is not going to cut it.

The heart and minds of some people is never going to be won. I wonder how we won the hearts and minds of the Japanese? Did we charm the Germans in liking us? NO! We rebuilt their systems piece by piece, and to our liking. For all of those people who hate America, they would come to America in a second if given the chance. What's need in such places is a complete redoing of everything there. It doesn't have to be republican (I use republican here because there is no example of a "democracy" anywhere in the world) government there, but for some reason, republican governments have been where economic progress is greatest.

When you're on top, you will be hated by those who want to be in your place.

THere are big differences between Japan/Germany and Al-Qaeda.  We are probably not going to change the minds of the terrorists themselves, but hopefully the minds of those that suppor them.

One thing if for sure, we cannot win the war on terror with brute force like we could a regular war.

Our best bet is to do what any military unit would do when under attack, SECURE THE PERIMETER.

Securing the perimeter is a SOP for the military.  Imagine if all the work that went into Iraq was instead used to make our borders safer and to prevent terrorists from getting into the US in the first place.

Not now that we are wasting all this money in Iraq.  But if we took that 5 Billion a month and invested in ways to actually keep the US safe from terrorists getting the materials through, it would be better spent.  Also, it might also help the war on drugs which is another losing battle.  JSIA

I dunno, but we haven't been attacked in 4 years, that says a lot.

i'm not convinced it does.  we hadn't been attacked on US soil for about 187 years prior to 9/10/2001.  that didn't mean we couldn't be attacked the very next day.

Pearl Harbor, Aleutian [sp] Is. in Alaska? World Trade center bomings...

"give us your tired, your weak...yada yada yada"  can't completely close the borders, aint gonna happen, unless of course you know of a lot of americans that are willing to work for minimal pay to pick your strawberries or build your house
