How useful are calculators?
« on: July 07, 2004, 09:34:37 AM »
Hey all.  I was just wondering, how useful are those calculators that some websites have?  There's one on chiatsu.com, something like that, that I think is fairly accurate, but I was just wondering what others thought.  Word.  Thanks all.

chiasu's calculator is totally accurate, but that does not mean that you will or won't get into a school with certain numbers.  It does make a great starting point though, since it tells you what the odds are of someone with your numbers being accepted, albeit it those odds are from a past year.

So, if it comes back with a 66% chance of getting in...  what would make you or break you?

maybe i'm doing something wrong here...

i plug in my numbers just for fun (they suck BTW) and it starts off at schools like Harvard and Yale and my chances are like 6.7 and 7.1 respectively.

then i continue to scroll down and schools like the one i got into are like 0.2411 (Hofstra).

how am i suppose to interpret them?  is the decimal displaced for the top schools?  also, how are the schools listed?  by ranking?

any help here would be appreciated.  this site just reinforced how much of a miracle it was that i got into my school.

hey canuck. check out the far right of your harvard percent number. There's scientific notation at the end. It's not 6.9 for harvard, but rather something like 0.0000069

I just ran the calculator with my numbers to see what kind of chance it gave me for the schools I applied to this past year (13 in all)...

Ones I was accepted to:
1: >75% chance
2: 40-60% chance

Ones I was not accepted to:
3: 40-60% chance
4: 40-60% chance
5: 20-40% chance
6-9: <25% chance
10-13: <10% chance

Observations:  This time last year the numbers looked REALLY different!  Two of the schools now in the 40-60% range were >75% last year.  One of the 40-60% and the >75% were all in >90% last year.  Those are the only one I distinctly remember.  Funny to see how much harder its gotten though!

What's the web address for the Chiasu calculator?  I'll try it and let you know how it goes as well, just to give everyone an idea.
