but what about that screen size?  if you have to stare at it all day, isn't that going to drive you crazy?

No. I have checked it out.  12.1" is not too small since the resolution is 1024x800.  There is not a massive amount of desktop space, but you can plug in an external monitor and use extended desktop, which is what I am going to do at home.

Also, the model I am getting has 512 MB standard.  There is another model that has 256.

Thanks.  That's encouraging.  Are you using it for law school?  Did you get the 15" flexview?

I scrapped the Averatec.  They sold out of the one they were selling at MicroCenter for $800 and the new model is $1,050 and won't be in stores for another three weeks (no one knows for sure, though).  I was going to walk out with the Averatec just a day or two ago, but when they didn't have it I just broke down and decided to spend the extra $500 on a much nicer ThinkPad.

The Averatec was going to be $1,200 anyway by the time I got the extended warranty and paid tax, etc. and the Thinkpad T41 that I'm getting for $1,750 sells on the IBM website for $2,600 so it is a pretty good deal even though it was a bit more than I wanted to spend.

no flexview. too heavy. but i'm glad i got the sxga+. the extra screen real estate is remarkable. going back to xga just feels so limiting.

superiorlobe...

That IBM looks like a pretty good deal, actually better than what I have seen on the IBM website.  Did you get that through the student section, or does your law school have a special deal?  My school doesn't have special deals, and you all have just about talked me into an IBM.

if you are going to get a dell, get the dell latitudes (not the inspirons). the lattitudes are sold to small businesses and, unlike the normal dells, they dont come with all the extra *&^% on them (aol, antivirus crapware, demos, etc...). basically, its just a clean system with an os on it and thats it. (though you can also get ms office preloaded if you want). also, the latitudes are known for being more reliable than the inspirons.

just look under the small business section of the dell web page. right now im leaning towards a D800.
