Michigan Fall vs Summer Start

On the application form for U Mich., there's are options to apply for fall admission, summer admission, or both. I was originally going to apply for just the fall term, but is there an advantage to doing so as opposed to applying to both fall and summer? Also, is the summer program more selective?

According to rumors the summer program is slightly (repeat only slightly) easier to get in.
