Atticus Falcon Rant
« on: June 30, 2004, 02:47:33 PM »
I hope this is not a repeat, but I just had to share...

I am a member of the Yahoo PLS group and I am considering revoking my membership..A student wrote to the group and to Atticus Falcon asking about his book and whether he should purchase it or not and go through the motions of prepping for it.  Atticus then blasts him and tells him he shouldn't even consider law school...WTF?

I am posting the original email and AF's post below..

I received an e-mail from someone who joined this group recently. The
following is apparently is not a joke:

"I have a question. Im starting law school in August. I have heard SO
much about PLS II and and I am extremely curious and intrigued to
read it. Hoever, money is a little tight for me right now and I was
just wondering, despite that, would you recommend still buying a copy
of Planet Law School or will I be able to pick up the gist of the
book off of this yahoo group?? I will not have time to do the pre-
study plan but I am still interested in hearing what AF has to say.
Pls let me know what you think..." [Ellipsis in the original. Nothing
deleted from this message.]

I did not put someone up to sending that to me as a joke.

Here is the response I sent out by e-mail:

I think you should forget you ever even heard about Planet Law
School. And I think you should drop out of the Yahoo group.

Your attitude is so casual that unless you truly are a natural-born
genius of the law or are the recipitent of a miracle, you will not do
well in law school, period.

It is obvious that you do not take the Law seriously, whether as a
subject or as a career, and are not seriously interested in preparing
for either.

You said "money is kind of tight." That is crap. You are about to
spend perhaps $15,000 for your first semester of law school, and will
be paying berhaps $500 for casebooks, commercial outlines, etc.. It
is obviously your parents' money )or Uncle Sam's) that is paying for
all this. You are going to piss away a small fortune on worthless
items, yet are not even willing to buy PLS II or any of the primers
it recommends.

I really do not want to deal with you at all, especially because
after you bomb (as you most likely will), you would blame PLS for
your failure to do well.

Good luck. You need it, badly.

* * * * *

I have now deleted that person's membership.
And anyone else who only wants to screw around and play at being a
future law student should drop out of this group, now.
No airheads, flakes, or dilettantes wanted.

Instead, spend your time reading Law School Without Fear, How to Ace
Your First Year of Law School, Law School Confidential, One L, etc.,
etc., and do what those books tell you to do.
-AF

I am not debating whether his method works or has any merit, but responding to a potential customer in such a way is really horrid...I am reading in PLS II which has a lot more information that PLS I but is far more verbose and could really afford to be cut down.

People have responded to this on the Yahoo group and have blasted AF..But I just had to post this and I am planning to write to him as well..

it is a repeat but for some it will be of value.

I've had my dealings with AF and this is consistent with my exchanges.

and sarahz, I believe he/she had a horrible time in LS and needs to deal with it in a more constructive way.

It is my understanding that AF is trying to orchestrate a class action suit against law schools because they don't tell us what we need to learn, teach us what we don't need to pass exams or to practice law.

so basicly this person didnt have what it takes to be succesful in law and is therefore suing because his/her own issues got in the way of a legal career.  i hope lawyers point and laugh at this person for being so pathetic!

It sure seems that way.  "They didn't teach me what I needed to know " could just as easily mean that AF just didn't learn what he needed.

after seconds of thoughtful consideration, I have a question... why does anyone care what atticus falcon said, says, or may say? you'll meet a lot of assholes like that in life, and, particularly, in the law. just take it with a grain of salt and move on.

Yes, Yes, Yes. AF is evil. Everyone has figured it out - congrats.

If you ignore the usefulness of PLS2 b/c of this ... great. More room on the curve for those of us who prep.
