Why do schools want to know where you apply?
« on: October 05, 2005, 08:00:02 AM »
Hi, all.  First time posting.  Been quietly observing.

Anyway, why do schools want to know where else you're applying?  Do they check?  Why would they need to know?  Just curious.

Thanks.

1.  In case something is really wrong with your app (you lied, you plagarized your essay etc) they can contact other schools and save them the trouble of reviewing your application.

2. they are vain and egotistical and wish to see who you think are worthy competition

3. they really just want to judge if they are a safety school for you

4. to get a feel if you applied to a certain geographical region or specific program specialities

5. to just annoy you with another question to fill out.

6. ties into 3, but its also a way to yeld protect.

that's about all i could come up with -- i'm sure others could provide some more reasons

Haha I love all those reasons! Two of the schools I'm applying to ask that question and they happen to be my safeties.  I hope they don't reject me because of the fact they're my safeties.  :-X

1. is illegal. All of your applications are confidential - the schools are not to contact other schools about an application.

All the rest seem like reasonable explanations. I imagine the main one is for yield protection seeing as a number of lower ranked schools ask for this, but not many top 14.

Yeah.  I hated putting Yale and Harvard down in that space on Northeastern's app.  I feel like they're going to yield protect waitlist me.  Or just reject me for being arrogant enough to apply to Yale and Harvard.  ;)

I would name some schools ranked around the school that is asking. For example, Fordham may give you some more money if they notice you have UNC, Boston College, and University of Washington on your list. They will prbly realize that money will be a deciding factor in your decision to attend any of these schools since they are so closely ranked.
