There are several websites like http://www.legalmatch.com/ (shameless plug) that assist attorneys in finding clients. You can also go to local county or city bar associations i.e. the San Francisco Bar Association, New York Bar Association, etc that you pay 50-100 bucks for and most of these offer client referrals. There are many answers to your question, but one of the most important things you can do is network with other attorneys. Constantly getting your name, face, and work product in front of as many other attorneys as you can will put you in the pipeline for referrals. It'll start out as the kind of work the referring attorney doesn't want, but work is work. That's how you build experience, self-confidence, and a networking system, i.e., relationships. You've got to sell yourself  — not your soul: your service and expertise. It takes a while. You need to be determined to succeed.

This really depends on the type of law you are marketing and the size of the city you are in.  For example, The best way to land long-term corporate type clients is through networking and relationships, in my opinion.   If you are marketing family law, bankruptcy, or personal injury (or something similar), you don't get a lot of return business so you need high volume.  You need to impress your clients enough that they refer their friends, and a lot of attorneys go for mass marketing in these areas, but giant billboards and radio ads can feel out of place in some markets.

Put an add in the local newspaper and mention "free consultation" or "workers compensation."

You can also ask other lawyers to send you the clients they don't want (there is usually good reason why).

What you shouldn't do is use runners, cappers, chiropractors and independent paralegals to obtains clients and don't solicit clients at hospitals or prisons.

You can hang around court rooms on law and motion day looking like a lawyer and clients may approach you.
