Criminal Justice System = The New Jim Crow??
« on: August 03, 2011, 01:45:48 PM »
Has anyone else read Michelle Alexander's "The New Jim Crow"? She was an ACLU lawyer in the Racial Justice Project, and this book basically says the American criminal justice system's methods of mass incarceration are creating the same effect that the Jim Crow laws had on black people.

By locking up black people in staggering numbers, they become second-class citizens when they get of jail. They probably can't vote, definitely can't get a job, can't qualify for public assistance, etc. And let's not even talk about the destruction of the black family, and subsequently, the black psyche.

As fellow black law students, what are your thoughts on this idea of mass incarceration as the new Jim Crow?

What are your proposed solutions?

And if you think Michelle Alexander is wrong, why? And if not racism, what accounts for the racial disparities within the criminal justice system?
