With the assumption that the US job market will turn positive (some day), what degree has better career earnings, the MBA or the JD ?

In addition - Which degree is more broad-based and useful for multiple career fields across different industries and even globally ?

It depends what JD and what MBA.

A University of Phoenix MBA isn't worth the paper its printed on
But even a Cooley JD opens the door to the bar

A Harvard MBA and a Havard JD have different potential upsides and downsides. The Harvard JD will likely have moderately high, but steady earnings. The Harvard MBA may start lower, but have significantly greater upside.

In general, the MBA is probably more versatile.

It depends on what you want to do with your life. A degree only gets you that first job. What you do thereafter is up to you.

If you have a JD you have to pass the bar and that gives you job security. If you want an MBA then get a joint degree. Most schools have that option.

Yeah, never heard of a guy with a MBA being laid off huh?
Truth be told, your better off to be laid off with a JD than an MBA.

You want job security get a masters degree in "Hospitality Managment" afterall hotels and fastfood joints are ALWAYS hiring. Dosn't make it a good idea, and definitly makes you an expendable pawn.

Possibly, but not necessarily. The thing with a business degree, such as a MBA, is that there is so much that you can potentially do. It pretty much opens you up to any job in corporate america (not that you are qualified for any job in corporate america, but it's a possibility), whereas with a JD you are limited to the legal profession (so fewer jobs to pick from). To some extent your options are more limited after you already settled into a specific field for a 4-5 years but even then there is a LOT of possibilities from in that field (e.g. if you work as a financial analyst at Cisco, it doesn't mean you won't find work as a financial analyst in some completely different industry).

I can see the perk of "flexibility" but a JD can be used outside law if needed. If reality it is a business degree. If you apply for a MBA type job with a JD(you've had to be hard up as hell to do it though) I could see the boss thinking, "yes all that and a bag of chips"(the bag of chips being able to be a lawyer if needed for legal advice) Even a General can do a privates job, but a private can't do a generals.
