how would a law school know who you are when everyone has a screen name?

People aren't inherently identifiable.  However, if one doesn't block their e-mail address, links their LSN, and posts identifiable information like school, major, home state, interests etc; adcoms can make fairly accurate deductions.  Furthermore, most anecdotal evidence supports the notion that they won't search you for the fun of it.  It's more when one comes off as obnoxious in general - and to the school in specific - do adcoms background check.

do you think they would continue checking even after one has their j.d.??? wouldn't that be a waste of time?

I couldn't imagine how this information would be valuable after the admissions stage.
