Want to Practice in New England...should I stay here?

Want to Practice in New England...should I stay here?
« on: October 02, 2009, 07:41:38 AM »
Hi Everyone,

I am a New Englander.  Grew up in CT and went to college in NH.  I know that I would like to live and practice in New England eventually, but would not mind moving somewhere else for a few years during and after law school.  But, people seem to feel that if you want to live somewhere you should go to law school there.  Just wondering what everyone's thoughts are about this in New England.

I have taken the LSAT and think I am in the 160 range and my UGPA is a 3.44 I am thinking about applying to these schools:

BC
Uconn

Northeastern
Tennessee
Oregon
Penn State

U Maine
West Virginia
Vermont

Any thoughts would help.

If you canít get into a national school, then go to school in the region you want to work. Most schools outside the top 25 are very regional. Also going to school where u want to work means you can network, clerk, intern without having to move over the summers, sublet your place, sublet a place in NE town ect. LS is not like UG, a law degree is not that portable, where you take the bar is pretty much where you will stay since you have to wait seven years or take the bar in each state you want to practice in.

Thanks for your response.  I am starting to realize I might apply more regionally.  I am willing to take the bar in multiple states, but we will just wait and see what happens.  Any suggestions on NE schools?

I'm from out west, so i don't know much if anything about NE schools. Taking the bar mutiple states can be an issue becuase many states hold it on the same days, sometimes neighboring states have it over 3 days, but most conflict and its only given in Feb and July, so you have to wait six months to take it again.

Yeah I did some research after reading your post and that seems to be the case.  I am probably going to want to work in CT and I think that is where I will take the bar and wait to do a MA/NH test the next round or year.  Thanks again for your help.
