I think Sotomayor was Bush I, and she was a compromise pick, elevated by Clinton to 2d. Cir.  I saw her speak once; I really liked her.

A lot of people don't think Obama wants someone "easier [to] confirm" since he has all the political capital right now.  I think that's more liberal law prof wishful thinking, though.
