Anyone know how long LSAC keeps your letters of rec on file?

I'm a current first-year law student, thinking of taking some time off after I finish 1L year and reapplying. Everyone has advised me to get letters of rec now, but my question is - how long does LSAC keep them for? I don't trust my professors to hold on to a letter I wrote. I would ask that they provide me with copies so I can hold onto them in the event I reapply, but I'm pretty sure law school recs are supposed to be confidential, right?
