40's to Columbia, NYU, Fordham?

I'm top 15 percent at a low 40's school.  I want to live and work in New York City.  I'm trying to do even better this semester so I could at least be competitive for applying to Columbia and NYU.  My main question is: if I don't get into those schools but I get into Fordham, would Fordham be worth it?  I like my current school a lot, but I feel it might put me at a disadvantage when applying to NY firms, etc.  Also, when should I start asking profs for LoRs and start really looking into the application process?  Any advice would be great.

Top 10% should get you into CN, and top 15% will definitely get you Fordham. Whether Fordham is worth it is a tough question. It's a lot better in NYC than its rank suggests, so depending on your T40 it may be an easy call. However, giving up a really good 1L GPA is tough... even if you are transfering to a T6.
