Be sure to draft your personal statement using an active, dynamic, and assertive tone. The past-tense, relatively speaking, generally connotes a fixed and retrospective voice, which can undermine the strength of your narrative.
Remember, above all, to write with the admission officer's perspective in mind. He/She will read hundreds, if not thousands of personal statements, and as a former admission committee officer, an active tenor is more readable.
