I didn't do ANYTHING during the summers. I was really miserable.
I did a clinic. I listed it on my resume. I don't consider it real experience. I don't think employers would, either.
I'm sorry to hear that. At this point, you have to try to sell your clinical experience as real experience, so take the time to talk to your clinical professor about how your clinic was similar and different to jobs in the field. Also, term-time externships at legal services and local government organizations are usually non-competitive. I would urge you to drop an academic class and add a clinical externship this semester. Finally, join an established pro bono project at your law school (e.g., volunteering at the courthouse to help people in eviction proceedings, escorting domestic violence survivors to court, helping people with their taxes).
