Question about judicial internship

Hello all, I am a 1L and this upcoming summer I will be working for a federal district court judge.  I was wondering if anybody could offer me some insight as to what I will be doing this summer at work.

Depends on the judge.  Researching legal issues and writing.  Observing trials/hearings/sentencing.

No offense, but you probably should have asked the judge, the secretary, or the law clerks this question before accepting the position.

Congrats... Probably a bunch of research/writing, and drafting court orders.  Basically a lot of the stuff from your 1L Legal Research/Writing class.

Don't worry about not having asked what you will be doing to the judge/clerks.  Because of the hurried timeframe of applying for these jobs, 1Ls have to do it pretty fast without thinking much about the actual work.  But its a great experience, enhances key skills, and (most importantly) is looked upon extremely favorably by employers - especially working for a federal judge!

Whatever you do, make sure you do a good enough job that the full-time clerks don't have to go in and clean up behind you...or if it's an ongoing matter, leave everything in a state at which it would be easy for them to pick up.  And don't be afraid to ask questions...our intern often went far down the wrong road, when a simple question would have cleared things up quickly and saved everyone some time.
