Changing careers

Is there a disadvantage for someone going to law school to change careers and coming out of law school looking for a job that does not relate to your previous work experience? Is it fair to say that once in law school, it is more about your acedemic and extracurricular performance than it is about your previous work experience when it comes to gaining employment in an area that does not relate to the previous work experience? I am changing careers and albeit I am interested in learning about job prospects that relate to my previous experience, I do not want to be limited in my search and do not want employers looking the other way..any thoughts?

My first inclination is that even with any solid work experience in any field, I would have an advantage over someone coming directly out of UG with no work experience.
