appellant/appellee vs. petitioner/respondent?

when is each used? is the latter for supreme court cases?

In general, use appellant and appellee for parties in appeals taken as a matter of right and petitioner and respondent for parties in courts with discretionary jurisdiction (like the U.S. Supreme Court's certiorari jurisdiction).  Some states use one or the other set of terms for both appeals as a matter of right and discretionary appeals; some states use both terms interchangeably.
