T-14 students doing temp work?
« on: December 05, 2008, 01:59:33 AM »
Hey everyone,

I was wondering if anyone from the t-14 knew of fellow grads having to do temp work after graduation? If so, where did they go wrong? Other then going to law school in the first place...

i haven't heard of anyone doing this coming out of cls.  why do you think this happens?

Because even HYS have at least 1-2% that blow male private part.

those people tend to wash out entirely.

meh, even if you're bottom of the class, there are probably places that will hire you as a full-time associate, if only to put your school name on their promotional material.  it'll probably be a small firm paying less than market, but it won't quite be temp work.

There's always a few that finish and still can't pass the bar and can't find work.

There's these guys

http://www.forbes.com/business/forbes/2008/1208/044.html

NYU and Yale

Good article. And FTA:

Quote
Stephen Vasil, a Yale Law School graduate, and Andrew Gilman, a New York University law grad, were hired through a temp agency to work on the Xerox case. Vasil says they often performed glorified secretarial work, including reviewing electronic documents to identify their author and destination. Vasil was paid $35 an hour, Gilman, $40. Yet the law firms in the case are asking for roughly $500 an hour for their services.

"We joked we could hire a bunch of 10-year-olds to do it for us," says Vasil, 34.

34 and doing doc review? God that has to hurt...

Still, $35-40/hr isn't horrible pay...

just some guy

As does the University of Michigan, appparently.....

the down side of temp work is not the pay, but rather the lack of status and opportunity for advancement.

From what I've read, temp work is also very inconsistent because it's project-oriented.  Some projects last weeks, others last months.  The hours are also, supposedly, inconsistent.

I'd imagine temp. benefits are also non-existent.

You guys are depressing me!
The main partner in their Entertainment Law group went to CLS, but he was Fiske and on LR, so be careful.  You don't want to set yourself goals that are too high.
