Depends on what you consider to be sucky.

Strip malls, driving everywhere, getting a shotgun stuck in your face by a 12 year old, fake breasts, over-compensating men, Ed Hardy.

Yes to the bolded.  In fact, there's an Ed Hardy store on Melrose, not too far from me.

I don't find strip malls to be prevalent where I live, or even in the Greater LA area.  This is if you decided to stay in SoCal and moved into the more suburban areas.

The driving is probably the worst part.  I don't get on the 10 East starting around 3-3:30PM (this is the freeway you need to take to get to USC if coming from the Westside) until about 7PM.  10 West from downtown LA to the Westside is a nightmare from about 7AM-9:30AMish.  You learn to take side streets a lot and even that can suck.  Our public transportation system is effing pathetic and no one thought to lay out this city in a sensible grid like some other major metropolitan areas so you hardly have a choice as to your commute.  Oh, and you probably will commute because downtown LA isn't where it's at to live and many USC students commute from either mid-city/Bev Hills area (holler!) or West LA (near UCLA).

By mid-city do you mean miracle mile/mid-wilshire? That makes sense, but I was always surprised that more USC kids don't live in culver city, especially in a world where there's a father's office with semi-adequate seating.  I'm told slauson -> fig/vermont work pretty well...but trying to do surface streets to USC from north of the 10 is a nightmare...

Yeah, I consider "mid city" anything from Pico up north to Wilshire, between Robertson and Fairfax.

Doing surface streets going east to USC is doable.  Pico is generally good in that direction, as is Olympic...at least, in the morning.  Venice is also another eastbound favorite.

Culver City is really nice.  Father's Office is great, but I'm also a fan of the downtown Culver area (save parking, which is a total clusterfck).  Lots of yummy restaurants/wine bars around there too.

Tons of kids live in Culver city/palms. I'll be moving there text year.

traffic does suck but CC/P to USC is a reverse commute
