Predict New USNWR Rankings Using the Latest ABA Data!

The above link takes you to their spreadsheet, go here if you want the index page

For those of us who have a lot of time on our hands, we could probably do a pretty good estimation of the next rankings.  One major thing missing is the reputation aspect provided by USNWR, but those don't seem to change that much year-to-year anyway.

I've looked at a couple of my targets, Berkeley, UPenn, and Chicago

School          25/med/75 GPA           25/med/75 LSAT           Employment
Berkeley        3.65/3.79/3.89          163/166/169              93.8
Chicago         3.51/3.67/3.77          169/171/172              94.6
UPenn           3.47/3.72/3.84          167/170/171              97.5

Berkeley is down on LSAT (median and 75%) and is down on employment from last year.  Penn and Chicago have gone down as to their 75% on LSAT as well, but penn is also down on its median by a point. Everyone but Penn has slightly lower employment figures from last year.  This will not be easy.  For these three, I'd say chicago, then Penn, then Berkeley, but I think I may have to look at bar pass rates and maybe put Berkeley above Penn.

EDIT: These are the 2006 entering class numbers.  My bad.

Chicago         3.51/3.67/3.77           169/171/172               94.6
Columbia        3.5 /3.7 /3.82           169/172/174               99.0
Harvard         3.72/3.86/3.95           169/172/175               95.6
NYU             3.58/3.75/3.89           168/171/172               95.6
UPenn           3.47/3.72/3.84           167/170/171               97.5
Stanford        3.77/3.87/3.96           167/170/172               98.1
Yale            3.83/3.91/3.97           170/173/176               97.0

So far, IMO

1.Yale (75% LSAT went down, but still untouchable)
2.Stanford (improved slightly on gpa and static on LSAT)
3.Harvard (75% LSAT and median lsat dropped one point)
4.Columbia
5.Chicago (median gpa up, median LSAT same)/NYU (median gpa up, but median LSAT down)-(both schools drop on LSAT point at 75%)
7.Berkeley (median gpa static and lsat down, 75% lsat down a point)/UPenn

1) Penn/Yale
3) Columbia (For you tm.)
4) Stanford
5) Harvard
6) Chicago
7) UVA
8) Mich
9) Georgetown
10) Berkeley

Notes:
1) Criteria for # 1... number of kasm's and whether your name is yale
2) Gtown beats out Duke and Cornell for t10 because... location location location!
3) UVA beats Mich because... location location location!  Warm > Cold
4) Berkley... ummm... never impressed me.  Meh?  And despite the number of wonderful amazing boalt people on LSD... hippies aren't my thing
5) Columbia = 2... because tm. is there.  Once he graduates it will no longer be there.
6) Stanford... I still love you even though you rejected me.
7) Harvard is harvard... I suppose it deserves to be toward the top?  again, Meh?
8) Chicago:  Pro-Scalia taught there Con-Obama taught there

/end of procrastination.

Does NYU drop off the top ten due to a severe drop in kasms in last year's entering class?

correct me if i'm wrong, but this isn't the most recent data (for the class entering fall '08), is it?  i ask because in that spreadsheet ucla has 5,834 applications, but they've made a big deal of saying that last cycle they had over 8,000 apps (which was up from that 5800 total the year before) - so the trends you're noticing are actually going in the opposite direction - harvard reports on its website that its 25th and 75th lsat for the class entering fall '08 are 170 and 176, columbia's (again...website) are 170 and 175, chicago's are 169 and 173, etc...

(as an edit, if those kinda drops were really happening, a shitload of admission deans would be getting fired - :) )

I don't know if it is the Fall 08 entering class, but the spreadsheet says 2008 and the numbers don't match last year's USNWR.  For that reason I thought that this would used in the coming USNWR.  If I am using old data, that wouldn't explain why my post-dictions are way off of the old edition, too!  My hindsight even stinks.

Good catch, though.  I'll stop working on this until someone else chimes in.  Back to the drawing board!

So, yeah.  I messed up and the statistics in the 2008 excel spreadsheet are from the 2006 entering class.  The current one uses the 2007 class.  The next will use 2008.  Maybe I'll try the numbers for 2008 available on the websites.
