how do SMU students fare in the Austin market?

I'm a current SMU 2L looking for a summer internship.  I only rank in the middle of class since I didn't do so well in my first year.  I've been applying to firms in Dallas but so far have gotten few interviews...

I know a campaign manager in Austin and he's introducing me to a biglaw partner.  Dallas gives huge advantages to SMU students.  Does Austin have the same strong preference for UT students?  Also, how much do you think the fact that the campaign manager knows the partner (I don't know how well though) will help me in securing a summer job in Austin?

Guys, please give me some feedback...I'm kind of desperate for this summer!

Austin is a tough market, period.  The jobs to be had probably go to kids from UT or better schools.  Middle of the pack at SMU will be a tough sell, even with your connection - its pretty late in the game for big firms.

Just FYI, as a Michigan student with strong enough credentials to get an offer at a top DC firm, I couldn't get an offer at any Austin firm.  Only one callback in Austin.

But take that for what it's worth... I have no Texas ties, and an SMU student clearly does.  But UT seems very dominant there.

P.S.-- I not only interviewed with every firm with an Austin office that came to OCI, but I did a mailing to Austin firms over the summer. Not a single response.

I'm planning on talking to a partner from Hughes & Luce, so technically it's more mid-sized firm rather than biglaw.

The austin market is the hardest to break in texas. I only know of 2 UT students who got biglaw jobs in austin and they are on law review and have engineering backgrounds (will be practicing IP). I know of at least 15 in the top 25% at UT who struck out.
