Does anyone have any useful or interesting insights/distinctions between the following firms in Los Angeles:

Latham & Watkins
Gibson, Dunn & Crutcher
O'Melveny & Meyers
Skadden, Arps, Slate, Meagher & Flom
Kirkland & Ellis

I want to work at a large firm, and am leaning towards California based firms since I think that those will better plug me into the local business scene (I'm not originally from California).  General pluses and minuses are welcome, reasons for choosing one over another, etc.

LW, GDC, and OMM are the Big 3 and each have great reps in CA.  However, both Skadden and K&E are increasing their reps in SoCal as well.  I worked at one of these firms this summer and I know several people at all of the other firms, but it would make it easier to help you if you indicated your practice area interests, preferred firm culture, etc.
