What about plaid and argyle?  Isn't one just rotated?

Not necessarily. Argyle has not only a plaid-like block pattern, but a thin square (or, in this case, diamond) outline displaced equally between the plaid-like block pattern. I don't think it's incorrect to consider argyle a form of plaid (i.e., gingham, glenn).
