Rapper Nas Delivers Fox News Petition, Says Network Is "Scared"

About four hours after the announcement that his controversial, politically charged ninth album was number one in the country, Nas was on a small podium in front of Fox News headquarters in New York City protesting what he sees as racist attacks against Black Americans and presidential candidate Barack Obama. In a brief prepared statement, the multi-platinum rapper pointed out examples of what he and ColorOfChange see as a long racist smear campaign against the Obama family: The onscreen graphic that referred to Michelle Obama as the Senator's "baby mama"; Bill O'Reilly casually using the phrase "lynching party" to refer to attacks on the Senator's wife; referencing to the couple's infamous fist thump as a "terrorist fist jab." Said Nas, "Fox poisons this country every time they air racist propaganda and try to call it news. This should outrage every American that Fox uses hateful language to talk about the person that may be the first black president."

The rapper stood next to 19 neatly stacked cardboard boxes, with the number 620,127 taped to the side of each one -- over 600,000 signatures gathered by ColorOfChange demanding that network president Roger Ailes "find a solution to address racial stereotyping and hate-mongering before it hits the airwaves." Fox rejected the petitions, but Brave New Films says that Comedy Central's The Colbert Report will accept them instead.

(all discussing or making mention of Nas in terms of hip-hop/rap greats, but not mentioning Eminem)

I was just glad to see somebody call out Fox news, because they need to be a little more accountable on their manner of reporting.  I wouldn't go so far as to call them racist per se, but they definitely display enough racial bias or insensitivity at times to make you roll your eyes.

They almost had me questioning the timing but this is tied more to the election and Obama than his record release. I mean that move is not gonna sell more records + there's a million other gimmicks out there if this was just some promo chit.

And FYI, if ya'll ain't heard Nas' "Esco Let's Go" yet, download that chit now! It's a mutherfuckin' banger!

It's unfortunate that Nas's efforts will be overlooked due to the timing of this petition.  Although I would not personally consider this to be a publicity stunt, I can understand why someone else would think so.  What else would he do to generate attention?  He's to classy for a disrecord or "personal youtube video" promotion.  At least he showed the initiative and did what the rest of our "African American leaders" should have done long ago - wage war against Fox.  Now just think if 5 other platinum selling artists from the hip-hop genre stood beside him and started an actual movement.

Right, for those who know or at the very least are familiar with Nas, then you know this has little, if anything, to do with his latest album and more so to do with the timing of the election and how that has been covered by Fox.  It's almost unfortunate that his new album just came out b/c I can almost guarantee that the majority of people who watch Fox news (a) have never heard of Nas and (b) once they hear this story and the fact that he just had an album drop, they'll automatically dismiss it as a publicity stunt.

As an aside, Nas' new album is really good.
