Car shopping
« on: July 06, 2008, 06:54:32 PM »
I'm looking at purchasing a new 4-door smallish sedan in the next few weeks. I'm looking at the Honda Civic, Volkswagen Jetta, and Toyota Corolla.

Does anyone drive any of these cars? Can anyone recommend something in the same class/price range that I might not have thought of?

Thanks!

The Civic and Corolla are both on Consumer Reports' list of best bets for used cars.

Two versions of the Jetta were on their worst list.

Corrollas/Camrys will never die, even when you wish they would. I'd recommend anything with a four-cylinder engine like a Chevy Cavalier or an Escort, as long as they're relatively new models. Four cylinder engines get great gas mileage.

Toyota all the way. If you haven't looked at the Scion xB (pre-redesign), you might want to give it a gander. People either love or hate the looks, but consider the following:

1. room for miles. Headroom, leg room, room for stuff in the back. Everyone who who sits in it says "Wow, there's a ton of space in here."

2. Dependable. I have had horrible experiences with American cars, their reputation is deservedly in the toilet. VW has quite a few reliability issues as well.

3. OMG, the gas mileage. Keep your tires properly inflated and don't gun it/ slam on the brakes and you'll get 38 mpg on freeways/ 28- 32 around town.

Product endorsement over. Can you tell I <3 my car?

Some picks you should maybe also consider are the...
Volvo C30
VW Rabbit
Subaru Impreza
Nissan Versa
Nissan Sentra
Ford Focus
Mazda 3
I don't think you could really go wrong with any of those picks if you plan on buying new.I personally recommend you take a look at the C30 if you have the extra cash (starts around 22k). I have had no issues with it, it has a decent amount of space and gas milage.

I think those C30's are cute, but for just a tad bit more you can get an Audi A3, and if your willing to drive to AZ to get it I'll sell you my 2006 A3 Quattro only 14k miles!

I like the C30 and have flirted with getting it while it's still pseudo-American (I don't drive foreign cars, and especially not foreign economy cars).  It's certainly a head-turner, although I think I've sort of had it with practical rides and might go for pure muscle while I'm young enough to not look entirely desperate while driving it.

I might suggest checking out the Saturn Astra.  It's unique from a Focus or a Civic (ew) and I've read good things.

I love my civic. 55000 miles in and no problems yet!

Cady likes to kick children, though, so you can't take her seriously...

I have a 2004 VW Jetta and I love it!  I've never had any real problems with it- the only thing that has happened is my driver's side window falling into the door (which, incidentally, happened to my sister's VW Golf, too), but I had just pounded on it to break up ice!  The car was still under warranty, so it was no problem to get fixed.  As far as I know, VW's are prone to quirky things like this, but don't often have major mechanical difficulties.  I'd recommend it ;)

ETA: my Jetta isn't on the Consumer Reports "Worst of the Worst" list Elephant Lee mentioned
