the problem was my application of the law.
My school allows a petition only if one believes that the grade was given for unfair reasons (ie, not based on a good-faith assessment of academic quality), AND if one has achieved below a certain grade. To be honest, 'application of the law' is 99% of what professors are looking for. If you're saying that you brain dumped all the concepts properly but failed to apply them to the given fact pattern, I would understand a low mark. Best of luck.

I know some professors can be scornful.

Well he's had it in for me ever since I kinda ran over his dog... Well, replace the word "kinda" with "repeatedly" and the word "dog" with "son."
