Start preparing a spreadsheet with mail merge info for 1L summer employers. The last time you want to be doing this is when you're in school. Most people at my school waited until 1L grades were in to seek employment. If you start looking by early December, then you take that factor out of hiring. I recommend it to take the stress off.
If you have no or little legal experience, give a phone call to the local public defender or legal services organization near your school and ask if you can volunteer a few hours a week for a few months of your first semester - just to see how things work.
