Are you trading up?
« on: June 14, 2008, 04:15:57 PM »
I was cutting the lawn (isn't that when we do our best thinking?) and began to wonder about whether people tend to trade up, trade down, or do about the same from the move from undergrad to law school.

I don't really care how you define the move, and I think spending too much time on that definition wouldn't serve my question too well (I reserve the right to change my tune) as I'm more concerned with general sentiments. Some examples with how I would answer the question:

Yale undergrad -> UVA Law (trading down a bit)
Vanderbilt undergrad -> Columbia Law (trading up a bit)
Virginia Commonwealth undergrad -> Michigan Law (trading up a lot)
Princeton undergrad -> Harvard Law (relatively equivalent)
MIT undergrad -> George Mason Law (trading down a lot))

Personally, I'm trading up a bit. Not too too much, but a bit.

The question has interesting implications I think. This will come out in replies.

I'm the same... but I'm hoping that getting off of a WL will allow me to trade up a little!

EDIT:  I made my deposit at my undergrad, so it's the same school, but they are also both ranked between 30-35, so it really is the same.

I think I traded up a fairly good bit.  I went to a relatively not-so-prestigious private undergrad, and I'll be attending UF for law school (a T1).  I think my LSAT, MBA and soft factors helped.

I doubt you'll get many in this thread who admit to trading down.  My guess (and it is just a guess) is that those who trade down do so because they might not have such strong GPA's from their hoity-toity undergrads + average LSATs.  Also, maybe some of them got decent scholarships that took the sting out of trading down a little for law school.
To put it bluntly, I seem to have a whole superstructure with no foundation. But I`m working on the foundation.

I said up by a lot, but I think it's really hard to tell.  I think the value I got out of my undergrad will be similar to the value I get from my law school, particularly for the price.
