This is an RC question.

I eliminated B, D, and E pretty quickly, but ultimately chose C out of gut instinct (the right answer is A). I can see how A fits, but is C wrong because it is too strong of an inference to make from the passage? That's what I'm thinking at this point.

C is wrong because in line 23, the author lists Dove as one of several recent writers who produce work in both genres.  The writers that he didn't elaborate on could have preceded Dove which would mean that her method of writing did have precedent in the U.S.
