Is completing first year at a worse school a horrible idea?

Thanks everyone - I've got a better feel now for transferring. The first impression I got from some people I talked to was that transferring was a pretty common/easy thing.  But if it's more of a long shot, then my idea is pretty much crap.  I highly doubt I will be getting into any T14 schools with my numbers (my undergrad was at Univ. of Florida by the way), so my dilemma will most likely end up being deciding between a higher-ranked (non T14) T1 with no money vs. a lower-ranked T1 or T2 that will give me some money.  I guess I will just have to wait and see where I'm accepted, and then I can join the "Which school should I pick??" discussions on this forum.  :)

Further killing your plan:  Many schools have a scholarship clause that if you transfer out, that scholarship just turned into a loan.
