Weird things you've been asked in interviews
« on: April 26, 2008, 01:36:52 PM »
At an OCI I got asked why I live in [suburb 20 minutes away from school]

Me: Because I live with my b/f and he bought a house down there before we met

Interviewer: Oh, but why THERE?

Me: Because it's easier to get to where he works

Interviewer: Where does he work?

Me: He's a teacher at ______

Interviewer: Oh, that's cool, how did you guys meet?

Then the conversation skipped back to my suburb and commuting to the city. Whatever, I got the job.

I was once asked "What would your worst enemy say is your best quality?"

(When we'd already discussed NYC real estate and my love of dogs)

"What'd you think about Leona Helmsley's will?"

Please note that this is the firm I ended up accepting.  :D

How did you prepare for finals?

What are the pros and cons of study groups, in your opinion?

What do you think of the BCS bowl matchups this year?

I think this is a pretty standard interview question.  I've heard it (or close variations) at least five times in interviews, only one of them for a legal job.

What's the difference between that and "what's your best quality?"

I have no idea, clearly, as the major differences I see seems to be significant with respect to only the amount of knowledge this person has about you. And why would they care to know how much they know about you?

Maybe it's after your most salient good quality.

I work in BIGLAW as an analyst. When I interviewed, this is the first part of the conversation:

Office Manager: "[insert my ethnic first name here]?"
Me: "Yes"
Office Manager: [blank stare]
Me: "I am [ethnic first name]."
Office Manager: "I thought you were African?"
Me: "I am from South Africa"
Office Manager: "But you are not black."

It gets better.

I went to interview with a partner, who asked me if I was Jewish. (Which I am) then he asked me what perfume I was wearing.

A week later, another partner (after also asking if I was Jewish) asked me if I was on birth control.
