I have a keen interest in medical side effects. I never watch TV, but if I happen to catch a drug commercial with the rushed and garbled laundry list of horrible side effects at the end (all spoken sotto voce), I am one happy camper.

They're not that rare.  And Rogaine doesn't make your hair stick up.

according to most sources, the side effects affect less than one percent of people who take propecia. and tell my sophomore year roommate that rogain doesn't make your hair stick up.

It's more like 1.5-2% for the sexual side effects but placebo wasn't much better (0.9%).  On the other hand basically everyone experiences a decrease in fertility related parameters.  That's not surprising though as DHT stimulates spermatogenesis and propecia blocks DHT formation.  Rogaine and Propecia work by entirely different mechanisms and they certainly are not an either/or proposition.

I tried Propecia and I felt out of it at times, so I stopped.  Who knows why.  I'm generally fine with Rogaine.  I guess everything affects people differently.
