Turning down a T14 IN THIS ECONOMY!

Turning down a T14 IN THIS ECONOMY!
« on: April 19, 2008, 04:47:24 PM »

I got a great deal from UT. Love Austin, and so on. Would be fine working in TX (would prefer it to the east coast really). I also got into GULC and Cornell. Assuming I get median at UT (I don't PLAN to be at median, but for the sake of argument) will I be screwed? Will a market job be out of the question? Geographically I am very flexible. Still, will I be cursing my decision next year? TYIA

again, assuming i get median, where would I mass mail from UT? Obviously all TX and CA. How about FL? LA? NV? Does UT place well there?

GULC if you definitely want DC, Cornell/GULC if you definitely want NYC, UT for anywhere else/you don't care.

Don't worry about THIS ECONOMY

Worry about THE ECONOMY IN 2009

Depending on the deal, it may be worth it.

Median at UT should manage around 100K, could get 160k biglaw if lucky, although not 100% guarantee.

Top 1/3 at UT is golden.

If you like Texas, you got a great deal from Texas and you want to work in Texas, I would go to Texas. Remember, 100k in Texas goes a lot farther than 100k in NYC.

I think you should go to G-Town or Cornell. UT is no guarantee, and if you miss the median you're screwed. I also heard you need to get the top 1/3 at UT to get Biglaw. Below that, it is hard to do. For the other two, stay above the bottom 1/3 and you'll get Biglaw.

NLJ figures show that 27% or so at UT go to NLJ 250...

That chart's from 2005.  The '06 and '07 classes placed 39% and 35% in the NLJ 250.  Not sure how much I trust something that fluctuates that much from year to year.
