guilty of poverty...will it hurt my chances
« on: August 11, 2005, 03:02:25 PM »
the beligerent state of CA wants $375 for a traffic violation that I supposedly commited. They say I have to pay them all up front before I can plead not guilty then after they do the verdict they will give it back.

I can't afford this. The only way I can choose the payment plan is to choose to say i'm guilty despite the fact I am innocent.

If I lie and say I'm guilty just so I can pay it will it hurt my chances for law school?

this bad law in CA is one I will try to change once I am a lawyer. without a degree most legislators ignore you.

I think that Ann Coulter & Julie Fern are the same person.

Just a theory that's brewing in my blonde little head

get off it :P

i'm asking a serious question. Do I choose to be unethical and avoid pain (say guilty). or do I hold fast to my ethics and face jail time for non-payment?

Explain the circumstances.

Have you tried fighting the issue in court yet?  Sometimes, you can actually win.

they won't let it go to court till I give them the $375 up front. once I give them the money then I can plead innocent and it goes to trial. The only way I can pay a little at a time is to lie and say i'm guilty of the traffic infraction.

Some schools say you don't have to disclose info about "minor traffic violations." Check the language at the places you are applying/have been accepted to. Depending on the school and the nature of the traffic violation, you may not have to disclose this and it won't matter.

Even if you do have to disclose, if the violation is relatively minor it may not matter anyway, especially if your explanation of the circumstances is reasonable.

If you need to inform schools and you think the guilty plea, even with an explanation, will make you look like a law-flaunting, immoral or unethical person, scrounge up the money to contest the charge.
