S: It would be premature to act to halt the threatened "global warming trend," since that alleged trend might not be real. After all, scientists disagree about it, some predicting over twice as much warming as others, so clearly their predictions cannot be based on firm evidence.

W. Most scientist consider discussions of accepted ideas boring, and prefer to argue about what is not known. According to the International Science Council, there is a consensus among reputable investigators that average global warming in the next century wil be from 1.5 to 4.5 celcius.

W's rejoinder proceeeds by

C) relying on authorities whose views conflict with the views of the authorities cited by S
D) putting disagreements cited by S in perspective by emphasizing similarities

I chose C, the answer is D...

explain please

W refers two authorities: scientists/the Council.

D) means that W agrees with S by supporting one relevant evidence to S's statement.

Yea...the premise of S's argument essentially begs the 'fractious opinion' side of the issue at hand as: the conceived logical structure....

W's retort picks up on that thread and issues evidence reciprocal to the preceding...evidence based upon concensus.

C is incorrect because there is no evidence the authorities cited by S and W differ

D is correct, if you liberally reinerpret the stimulus as follows:
S: (Conclusion) We shouldn't do anything about global warming.
(Reason) Some scientists say we'll all be dead in 10 years, while other say no, it'll be 20 years.

W: But both are saying we're going to die!
