hey everyone...please dont flame me but I have a serious question.  For the past 5 generations my family has come from Tanzania, Africa.  They migrated from India like back in the 1840's.  Needless to say i'm not Black but have held a Tanzanian passport.  My question is what am i? am i considered an African American?

My dad is from Pakistan and he was born in Sweden, and I was born in Sweden but I am still ethnically Pakistani. Before I was a Pakistani-Swede, now I am a Pakistani-American....

So before you were an Indian-Tanzaneze(guessing thats what they call them, sorry if its wrong) and now you are an Indian-American...

You really only need ask yourself this question.

Yes, due to the British there are plenty of South Asians in Africa who have been there for generations.  But, there are also plenty of white people (Afrikaaners, Boers, etc..) who have been there as long if not longer.  To call yourself African American on an application is misleading at best, lying at worst.

The answer is so easy.  The term Afr-American is the newer more PC term for black.  so if u say u are not black, then u are not Afr-American.  You are South Asian and on the forms, you need to put "Asian/Pcacific islander".  HTH:)
