Let me add another favorite, I think from Diderot (and keep in mind that we are talking about corrupt 18th-century French Catholic priests who were squarely in the pocket of an absolutist and autocratic French monarch):

"Mankind shall never be free until the last king is strangled with the entrails of the last priest."
"I never think of the future.  It comes soon enough."--Albert Einstein

My fave MLK speech is "I've Been to the Mountaintop."  "I Have a Dream" is great too, but that Mountaintop speech is truly beautiful.

I'll add one of my favorite poems...they're quotes too, right?

If We Must Die - Claude McKay

If we must die, let it not be like hogs
Hunted and penned in an inglorious spot,
While round us bark the mad and hungry dogs,
Making their mock at our accursed lot.
If we must die, O let us nobly die,
So that our precious blood may not be shed
In vain; then even the monsters we defy
Shall be constrained to honor us though dead!
O, kinsmen! We must meet the common foe!
Though far outnumbered let us show us brave,
And for their thousand blows deal one death-blow!
What though before us lies the open grave?
Like men we'll face the murderous, cowardly pack,
Pressed to the wall, dying, but fighting back!

This poem motivates me even though I dislike the patriarchal presence of line 13. ;)

Quote
Courage is not the absence of fear, but rather the judgement that something else is more important than fear.

People with courage and character always seem sinister to the rest.

Death is more universal than life; everyone dies but not everyone lives.

We make a living by what we get, we make a life by what we give.

Show me a man who lives alone and has a perpetually clean kitchen, and 8 times out of 9 I'll show you a man with detestable spiritual qualities.

I prefer McKay's "America" but I'm bitter like that. :D

In this vein credit must be given to Dunbar's "We wear the Mask" and almost everything from Langston Hughes and Countee Cullen.   "Phenomenal Woman" and "And Still I Rise" from Maya Angelou

edit:  and you are right about Mountain top. add that on mine.

This one because I like to think he is talking about people who back Dubya  ;)
