Sony Picturebook as your LS Laptop
« on: June 23, 2005, 10:40:34 PM »
I am a diehard Apple person, but I also use PCs, and more and more I'm wondering if my Sony Picturebook won't beat out my 17" Apple Powerbook for law school duty.  I haven't noticed anyone here discussing the Picturebook, so I thought I'd bring it up as another viable option.  The goal behind the Picturebook is absolute size-- only USB, PCMCIA, firewire, and a modem are available.  There is no CD drive, though you can buy a PCMCIA DVD drive.  The keyboard is small, but for exams I'll bring a keyboard with me and I don't mind typing on its reduced sized keyboard day to day.

I think the Picturebook would work out well for a desktop user (like me) who needs a laptop in class.  It's been very robust for me and fits anywhere.  Here are two pictures to compare size.  (For those wondering, the screen is 1024x480)

You will pretty much hate yourself and life trying to type notes on the Sony Picturebook. I highly recommend you stick with your powerbook. If you're trying to slim down...get a 12' Powerbook.

You dont think the reduced size keyboard will be a problem until you're scrambling to type notes, search through something, etc. It really does make a difference, and wouldnt it be awfully cumbersome to have to bring in a 'regular size' keyboard for tests and stuff? The Powerbook is a thing of beauty, and aint exactly huge either. Granted, the 17' is on the larger side, but at least its pretty thin and light in comparison to what you could be working with.

If you think you can type notes reasonably well on it, and read them, go for it. If you do use it, I would suggest using a larger LCD screen at home for going over notes/outlines. As long as you bring a better keyboard and a floppy drive to exams, you shouldn't have a problem.

You're going to want more RAM and a bigger keyboard.

I'm thinking of the SNL sketch where Jimmy Fallon, Pierce Brosnon, and Will Ferrell are uppity clerks at a high end men's clothing store.  There's a ringing sound and Will Ferrell uses his finger tips to pry open a postage-stamp sized cell phone.
