Commuting to Orange County from L.A.
« on: June 09, 2004, 07:04:16 PM »
Hi all. I am thinking of commuting from downtown L.A. to Whittier in Costa Mesa. I really am cozy here, and don't want to move. Is there anyone else planning on commuting?

several of us attending whittier will commute from LA (i assume you are attending whittier, there's no other law school down in costa mesa).

i currently live in Glendale and work in El Segundo.  I will then commute down to Costa Mesa for the PT program.  Then drive back to Glendale at night.

That sounds like a hell of a commute.  I don't know why you'll have any time.

A couple of students at Whittier told me no one commutes from LA after the first year.  Apparently a lot of first year students try to do the commute and realize its impossible and move for 2L.  Perhaps only being PT won't be as bad though.  I'm sure it can be done if you manage your time wisely, I just know I wouldn't want to do it!  :)

That commute sucks! Believe me, I do it everyday. And I only go from Cerritos to Costa Mesa. The "orange crunch" is nothing to mess with. You will be so stressed out and waste a lot of time driving in my opinion. But if you're happy where you are then try it out. Personally I would do anything to avoid traffic though.

Ok here's the deal.  I live in Costa Mesa.  My boyfriend lives in Encino.  I work in Laguna Beach.  (Thankfully in August, I am moving to Woodland Hills and the craziness will stop ....).

It is pure hell.  It takes me 2 hours to get to work on a Monday morning, up to 3 hours to get back to the Valley in the evenings if I leave at 6 (I try to leave around 7 or 8 pm to beat the traffic).  The 405 is the spawn of the devil.  Without a doubt.

So -- if you are hell bent on commuting I suggest the following things (as this is what makes my commute bearable):

1) Ask Whittier to split the gas money with you.
2) Demand that Whittier take you out for sushi at least once a week
3) Accept the fact that the sex with Whittier alone is worth the drive
4) Invest in a good headset and upgrade your cell phone minutes plan
5) Get satellite radio (Sirius has all the NFL games)
6) Get used to eating in your car and skip the "Supersize" movie or you'll starve to death

Good luck!
