Wow $932 a month for a mortgage isn't bad at all! Some people pay that in rent up here!! If I can have a nice house for that price, I wouldnt mind the commute at all. I'm actually used to commuting, i've been doing for the last few years now. But I do think you're right, if you're renting its proably best to live closer to the campus.

Apartment's rental price in Houston is getting lower. Especially on the small properties, studios - etc. For example in 2014, for requested location, you could spend up to 1700$ for 1 bedroom apartment, probably unfurnished, but now it's something around 900-1000$ for studio and 1300$ for an apartment. Why wouldn't you live on campus? I know that in UT campus is very comfortable. My brother studies there.
