I still disagree...Because if Louisiana is included in the range of traditional "Southern culture" then East Texas must also be included (because the two are identical), and by extention, so must the rest of Texas be included.

However, if (and only if) Louisiana is not included, whether it be because of its Cajun traditions or relative lack of a developed antebellum aristocracy, then I will concede that Texas is not a part of the "South" that is being discussed.

This pretty much sums it up:

It is like Arkansas, Kentucky and Virginia.  Some areas are, but some are not.  Tennessee, North and South Carolina, Georgia, Alabama and Mississippi are the 'meat' of the South.

Maryland is not Southern despite its location south of the Mason Dixon.  Texas is closer to Southern than any other region, but there is an independence to identifying with Texas over the South that prevents it from being truly Southern.

This thread reminds me...
I have to deal with a recalcitrant Marylander at work, with whom I constantly get into debates about whether or not Maryland is, indeed, a "Southern state".

Being from Texas, and having lived throughout the "Real South", it seems intuitive that Maryland is obviously not the friggin' South, but the geographic evidence is not on my side.

If someone were to insist on the same ridiculous proposition in your presence, how would you respond?

Maryland != Southern. Period.  Im from NoVa and I consider NoVa the cut off.
