PrepTest 36 game
« on: June 05, 2004, 04:34:58 PM »
I've spent over 1 hr trying to figure out the fruit stand logic game on PrepTest 36 and I just cannot get it.  Can someone help me?

A fruit stand carries at least one kind of the following kinds of fruit: figs, kiwis, oranges, pears, tangerines, and watermelons.  The stand does not carry any other kind of fruit.  The selection of fruits the stand carries is consistent with the following conditions:

If the stand carries kiwis, then it does not carry pears.
If the stand does not carry tangerines, then it carries kiwis.
If the stand carries oranges, then it carries both pears and watermelons.
If the stand carries watermelons, then it carries figs or tangerines or both.

2. Which one of the following could be the only kind of fruit the stand carries?
A) Figs
B) Oranges
C) Pears
D) Tangerines
E) Watermelons

I can figure out that its not B) or E), but I am lost after that.  Correct answer is D.

5. If the stand carries watermelons, then which one of the following must be false?
A) The stand does not carry figs.
B) The stand does not carry tangerines.
C) The stand does not carry pears.
D) The stand carries pears but not oranges.
E) The stand carries pears but not tangerines.

Again, I can see that it is not A) or B), but I am lost after that.  Correct is E.

It may be something obvious that I am just missing.  Thanks !!!

It cant be A because if it doesn't carry Tangerines it must carry kiwis...

It cant be C because..If it carries Pears it doesn't carry Kiwis...and if it doesn't carry Kiwis  it MUST have tangerines.

It can't be C...
If it has watermellons then it carries either figs or tangerines or both...fine
nothing makes it carry a pear.

D. It can carry Pears but not oranges...
Pears means it can't carry kiwis...again fine..

E  Pears but not Tangerines:
Pears means it can't carry kiwis...
BUT NOT tangerines means it must carry Kiwis...

So E is the answer.

Wow.  Now I can see the light.  I don't know why I missed it before.  It was right there in front of me.  Kind of like deer in the headlights, I just froze up.  Thank you !!

3years removed from OP date but I just searched the web for an explanation of the same game for the same questions. Thanks.
