Going to meet with the dean....
« on: June 01, 2004, 05:28:20 PM »
Well I decided to fly from texas to DC to meet the dean at a law school i have been waitlisted at. She told me I can schedule a time to meet with her when I get in. I want to talk to her about my chances of getting off the WL and why I should be admitted in, but I really don't know how to approach this. I mean, what am I going to say when I meet her. At a job interview, they ask you the questions and there is planned dialogue, but I dont know what to anticipate since this isnt a interview but rather a meeting. I am also wondering how I should dress. I was planning on dressing nicely but should it be business attire? I dont want to come in unprepared nor do I want to come in looking pompus. Its hard to gauge the proper approach to this non-traditional means of law school entry. I will also make another stop at another school I am WL in Texas on the way to the airport. I will do the tours (if availible) and try to market myself. Any suggestions? Has anyone else met with the law school especially if you live far away from the school itself?

I just called the lawschool, talked to the dean, and told her I am flying into DC, wanted to see the school, and discuss my WL situation.

I met with a Dean from a school that is located pretty far away from where I live.  It was more of a conversation than an interview, but I'm sure this could differ based on the personality of the person you speak with.  I would learn as much as possible about the school - curriculum, clinics, special programs that make them unique, etc.  Make a list of questions that you can ask, stuff that you couldn't find out yourself online that will show that you really researched the school.  You want them to know that you appreciate what they have to offer without being desperate.  As for what to wear, it's DC, so don't worry about looking pompous!  Just don't act pompous and you should be fine.  I talked to someone on the admissions staff and they said that visiting is really the best thing you can do because they can associate a real person with a file.  Have you talked to the admissions office about how their numbers are?  A lot of schools have already done a second round of deposits and have a better idea of the odds of actually using the waitlist.  Good luck with your meeting!

Thanks for the info, and to address an earlier thread, no I am not a stalker. My LSAT score was really low so the fact that I have been WL is a blessing. I am being overtly cautious and I am at the point were I am "crossing all t's and dotting all i's." The school has less than a 100 left on the WL and its rummored that they may take up to 20 off that list, so I am doing everything in my power to make it on that list of 20. (dont worry, I dont own a tent and dont plan on purchasing one come august).

What school in DC is it that you are going to visit? Also, I think that it is a very good move to meet with the Dean. I agree that once they meet you and can associate the application with a face, it may be harder to reject you. I've tried to get interviews at a few schools at which I am waitlisted, but no luck.

I am going to go visit the dean from GMU. I've kept in constant contact with her via emails and snail mail and called her last week (for the first time) asking her if she received my updated transcript and address change. I am going to send another letter via snail mail with an updated resume, continued interest letter, and "i'm looking forward to seeing you in a few weeks" letter. Some have said that GMU has been rather rude to some, but the dean has always been more than cordial to me and GMU has a discussion board thread that she monitors and responds to daily. This is my only chance at getting into law school this year, so its all or nothing. Good luck, if your in the same dilemma.
