UCLA Bound

I'm on the waiting list for University Village (UCLA family housing), which seems to be one of the best bargains for marrieds/domestic partners. I was told that it usually takes six months to get a spot. Fortunately, I put my name on the list in December, so I'm hoping to get some good news next month.

I was offered an apartment in University Village (married student housing) last week.  Sent in my deposit but we're still looking to rent a house in the Hermosa area if we can find one.

Was guaranteed housing part of your acceptance package,  or were you lucky enough to get in off the waiting list?

The housing was part of my acceptance package, I pretty much just called and told them what apartment I wanted and when I wanted to move in.  I was surprised, UCLA housing has been really responsive every time I call -- I live in student housing at UCSD right now and it is a bear to get them to return a phone call.

That's a great perk. I'm thinking UCLA's responsiveness has a lot to do with your acceptance package, which would put you on the "highly recruited" list and gives you priority over everyone else. I'm trying to get into the same apartments, but I'm on the "you were lucky to get in" list. Shoot.

Is the Hermosa area south of LAX? Wouldn't that be a bad commute?

It did help make our decision knowing we had the option of living cheap on rent!  I know they have a lot of vacancies coming open right now so hopefully the wait list will start moving.

Hermosa would be a tough commute for me, but my husband works in El Segundo and we're both used to living near the beach (coming from San Diego) and I actually don't mind driving in traffic too much. We looked around Torrance as well, but even inland it's still too pricey. It could be worse though -- HR at his company was recommending we check out Long Beach.
