$93,000 Cost of Attendance? Huh?

$93,000 Cost of Attendance? Huh?
« on: April 12, 2005, 09:36:43 AM »
So I got my financial aid package from Hastings yesterday, and the estimated cost of attendance is listed as $93,813.  I'm confused.  Does anyone have a clue as to why Hastings would budget 10 grand a month for attendance?  Or does my financial aid info just contain a freakish typo?

...which was my initial thought, as well.  However, the breakdown is clearly marked as $46,000 for fall and $46,000 for spring, and the monetary amount for my Stafford/Perkins loans aligns with one year's tuition.  Confusion makes my head hurt.  Ouch.

ummmm, huh? My Hastings finaid letter lists cost of attendance at $41,000 for the whole year, or something like that...so, yeah, thats weird. What does your award include? Do they expect you to take out $50K in private loans or something? Wacky.

My award has $5,000 in expected assistance, a $5,000 grant, $18,500 in Stafford loans, and a $4,000 Perkins loan...plus $60,000 in private loans.

Maybe I got the "special" tuition rate at Hastings  ;)

I guess I should break down and contact the Finaid office.  I was hoping that the internet would magically answer my questions, but alas, it appears that I must actually exert effort.

You could take the extra 60k over the three years and then run away to Saudi Arabia with your newfound fortune of 180,000 US dollars.

I had to call the financial aid office with a question about the O'Neill loan (for Sacramento residents) and they were really helpful and nice - but my situation wasn't as weird as yours  ;)

Ok, I just called (which was much more painless than I had feared).  Apparently, yes, it was a freakish typo.  The woman on the phone started laughing when the words "93 thousand dollars" came out of my mouth.  So, they're sending me out a new award letter, hopefully with a much more realistic private loan limit!

I *was* starting to daydream about what a sweet apartment I could get in San Francisco for $6,000 a month, though...
