I went to parking svcs on Friday trying to buy my permit (they won't let me till I have my Cane ID Card) and they said that you can park wherever you want. You're supposed to put the temp. permit on your rearview mirror (you can pick it up at parking svcs in the Ponce de Leon garage), but if you don't have one and you get a ticket you can get take it up with the dean (i think) and you won't have to pay. I think I'm going to park in the Ponce garage tomorrow since it's covered and the spots are much bigger than at the law school. From what I saw, the shuttle is very regular and comes frequently, but the walk isn't that bad either. Does anyone know how much the preferred parking is? I can't find out how to buy one of those permits.

How early are you guys planning on getting there? I'm always super early for EVERYTHING so I'll be there by 8. I. And what is everyone wearing? On the UM forum thing it says to dress comfortably. I think I'm going to dress casually. Coming from LA, no one dresses up for anything, not even work :)

Can't wait so meet you guys.

ill probably show up around 8:30.  im just wearing jeans, a shirt and sandals.

switching topics...is anyone else planning to take notes the old fashioned way? i cant type very fast on little laptop keyboards and without a mouse i think on the fly editing/formatting will be too clumsy, so i think im going to take notes with a pen and paper.  im just second guessing this decision because it seems like EVERYONE takes notes on their laptop

Why don't you get a wireless mouse? I have one and it makes everything easier. Definitely worth the $40 or $50. And, from what my friend who just finished 1L said, it's best to take notes on your laptop because it helps you to type faster which is a big help during exams. I'm going to try to take all notes on my laptop and use a notebook for things that I don't have time to type(ie. long statements/ideas that i'll add later)

i'm definately going comfortable to school tomorrow..

Kate, you can purchase your parking permit online through EASY.. just click on "Life at UM" tab once you log on.. and then click on "Apply for a permit"

also, I was told how we can find out our sections and professors.. obviously we don't know how fool-proof this method is.. but..

log on to EASY.. and note what your UM email address is.. then click on the Student / Academic tab of Easy..
on the right you will see a link to blackboard.. click on that

Log onto blackboard using your cane email address and date of birth.. and then you'll see what classes you're enrolled in.. and what professors you have (which is useful cause then you can look up the books at the UM Bookstore)..

After every class, there will be one to two letters... the letter that appears after each course is your section!!

OKay so somebody at orientation figured out how to do this.. obviously i wouldnt recommend trusting this 100%... Im just impressed somebody figured out how to do this at all..

so after all of that.. it looks like i may be in section B.. and that two books from the recommended summer reading list are required for one of my courses and luckily i've already read them.. (a Civil Action and Buffalo Creek Disaster)...

i talked with someone at admissions the other day about parking.  she said that a lot of the permits were not sent out (i never received one), and that there was a grace period in the law school parking lot until september 1st.  thus, we should be able to park there without problem.

i guess i will go casual as well.  if you see someone with short dark hair and green sandals, that's me.

Okay so I'm a loser and I have laid out my clothes for my first day.  I'll be in a brown tank top and a blue and green paisley skirt.  I'm 5'7 with dark brown hair.  COME SAY HI!!!
GO CANES!! I bleed orange and green!
