This raving about Kendall has got to stop.  It is one of the lamest places to live in Miami, unless you are old and have ten kids, or you're retired.  Yes, it is near shops and (chain) restaurants on Kendall Drive, whoopee!!  Why not live near where the stuff happens? Near REAL restaurants, not chain restaurants, near the nice bars, near boutiques and art centers, near museums and parks, near the ocean and the bay?  Kendall is NOT pretty.  You will be living in Miami for three years.  Have some fun and live it up!!  You will have the rest of your life to be suburbanites.

By the way, I'm Jack. I just graduated from UM undergrad with a degree in Finance.  I am living in Coconut Grove.  I look forward to meeting you all and causing trouble!  If you want to know where the FUN is, ask me.  I have lived here for four years and know all the UM and Miami hangouts for those that want to balance their schoolwork with some fun.

people from places like Texa slike Kendall bc it is suburban and plaaned.  some people dont like big city living but still want to be near scenic parts of miami. The only people that dont like Kendall are native Miamians and east coasters from big cities.  IMO Kendall was BY FAR the most livable AND affordable places within driving distance of the school.

I just did the passport photos.  They look crappy but I really couldn't care less.  It looks enough like me to get by.

hey everyone! I haven't logged on in a while, but kind of glad I missed the arguing that was going on..

I think Kendall will be perfect for Calikate, and others.. she wanted a house, and i think it may be the most affordable/safe option for her.. especially since she's married and startign law school.. not sure how much extra time we're going to have for THAT much partying and fun our first year.. add that to the fact that she's got a husband she will also need to be spending time with him..

I'm actually worried about the significant loss of spare/free time I will have my first year.. Its already pretty hard to find free time to spend with my boyfriend and working around his schedule (he's got a demanding full-time job and is getting his MBA).. I can't imagine how much harder it may be to spend time together when my schedule will soon be just as busy...

Anybody else worried about how to handle a relationship and 1L year?? I'm especially worried about the first year.. i'm sure the second and third year will be a little easier..

I was excited about law school.. now i'm in more of a panic/excited anticipation mood as we get closer to August 15...

As for pictures, I'm gonna try and take some with my digital camera and print it on my photo printer.. I think i've only printed one picture since I got it, so I know its going to be a headache to figure out how to crop and print it to the required size.. but if I get it down.. i'll let you guys know

DJladyJo: I think any couple worries about the pressures of law school. Fortunately for me, he'll be commuting between LA and Miami for the first few months (at least) for his job, until he finds something comparable in Miami. So, I won't feel guilty since we'll plan his visits around my schedule. All of the attorneys I work with say that if the relationship isn't strong it generally ends by the end of 1L. I think you just have to make the time for your sig other. And another friend who just finished 1L said that anyone who has a full time job and any sort of commute will find the time constraints of 1L won't seem any worse and we might end up feeling like we have more free time. I hope she's right!

I was going to ask if anyone is feeling stressed, actually. I feel like I can't remember anything for more that 5 seconds because I have so much to do in the next month before I move. You should see my TO DO list!! Fortunately, I haven't had a chance to think about school yet. If I do, I'd have a nervous breakdown!

Jeff, I thought you were not going to Miami anymore because you couldn't find a place to live. Not to be rude, but anytime any of us says something about where we are living you feel the need to throw in your opinion and argue with people. No offense, but if you are no longer going to be living in Miami or attending the law school there, then why do you continue to come on this board?

Oh and does anyone know when UM will be mailing out info about the health insurance? I didn't see anything in the orientation packet. And, do they bill us in the fall or has it already been included in the total cost of attendence? (I think it's the later, but I want to be sure, for budgeting purposes)

i thought the university health ins. plan was optional?  i currently have blueshield/bluecross as an individual - i pay about $75/month for health ins.

also i think i will be finalizing on a place in brickell.  i know it has been discussed before but what are the commute times to brickell?  i was told that i could take coral way/miracle mile and some other backroads - and following this route it would take me about 20 - 30 mins.  Does this sound right?

I believe the Health insurance is in addition to the tuition and fees.  I think it has gone up to over $1400 for the year.  So tuition and fees equals $31,096 plus ~ $1300-1500 for insurance.  I imagine they will collect the entire insurance fee upfront so your first semester bill will probably be about $17,000.
