one of the more ridiculous advertisements seen on craigslist.

casino

p.s. do you think that 1000 a month is too much, or reasonable?

It depends on what you are getting.  I'm paying 1100 for 2/2 close to campus.

Hey Casino, we used a real estate guy named Fernando Arrate (he has lots of listings on Craigslist) and we were very impressed. When I first spoke to him I didn't think he'd be as cool as he was, but if I were you I'd call or email him. Be honest with what you want and he'll tell you what he thinks are good places for your money. My husband has his info, but I can get it for you if you can't find it on craigslist.

good question.  i would hate to go to kinko's and get two passport photos, because that is going to look lame as all hell on the face book.  i am sure that the cane id pic has to be more standardized, though.  one of us should ask.

I just did the passport photos.  They look crappy but I really couldn't care less.  It looks enough like me to get by.

Calikate: what shortcut did your landlord tell you about? The quickest way to get to campus seems to be the S. Dade Expressway to Bird to San Amaro.

As for the distance/time issue, I guess it's to each his own. It doesn't seem like much to me, partly because I drove 10 miles each way to high school, (though I realize that it wasn't in Miami rush hour traffic) and partly because I drove an hour each way 4 days a week to ice hockey practice when I was younger.

Casino: $1,000/month seems to be reasonable, but I'm no expert. I guess it depends on your finances and what you're looking for.

I just got back from apartment hunting in Miami.

One of the most unexpected things I discovered was the taxi situation down there.  It is nothing like New York or Philly where if you want a cab you stand on the street and flag one down within a minute or too.  You have to call a company to come, and all 3 times I did that the response time was 30-60 minutes.  Since I didn't venture onto public transportation which I hear cannot get you to too many different destinations, it seems basically essential to have a car if you want to go anywhere.  I was planning on buying one when I get down there anyway, but there didn't seem to be a way around it.

I got a studio just on the other side of S. Dixie Highway for $975 furnished w/ all utilities included.  I visited at least 5 different places with rooms still available within walking distance of the law school.  Although I look forward to walking every day, damn was it hot walking around campus.  Gotta love it though.

NCCane: The shortcut is sorta hard to explain, but basically instead of turning with traffic at one point, you go strait and go around it where it all bunches up at Killian. When I move down I'll get all the specific info for you (intersections, etc). The one thing I like about where we're going to live is that we're close to Kendall Dr which has every store and restaurant a person could possibly want.

This raving about Kendall has got to stop.  It is one of the lamest places to live in Miami, unless you are old and have ten kids, or you're retired.  Yes, it is near shops and (chain) restaurants on Kendall Drive, whoopee!!  Why not live near where the stuff happens? Near REAL restaurants, not chain restaurants, near the nice bars, near boutiques and art centers, near museums and parks, near the ocean and the bay?  Kendall is NOT pretty.  You will be living in Miami for three years.  Have some fun and live it up!!  You will have the rest of your life to be suburbanites.

By the way, I'm Jack. I just graduated from UM undergrad with a degree in Finance.  I am living in Coconut Grove.  I look forward to meeting you all and causing trouble!  If you want to know where the FUN is, ask me.  I have lived here for four years and know all the UM and Miami hangouts for those that want to balance their schoolwork with some fun.

I've lived in LA for five years and have partied hard enough in that time. Now that I'm married, the quieter life is perfect for me and that's why I like Kendall and not all the superficiality of South Beach. But, welcome Jack.
